In the Catholic Church, just like anywhere else, much hypocrisy can be found.
People complain about faults that others have, as if they themselves were perfect , and keep their distance from people who need material, physical, psychological or moral help.

Jean-Baptiste Marie Vianney was not hypocritical at all. To him I dedicate my following poem about him.

The vicar of Ars

He was a simple farmer's son,
always working hard;
gave to every beggarman,
soon the better part.

Learning was so difficult,
Latin too was sore;
but he could become a priest,
for there were no more.

Was appointed parish priest,
went to Ars on foot;
could not find the way alone,
so he stayed and stood.

"Fellows, will you show the way
to my parish place,
then I'll show you how to go
to the angels' space."

Church was empty and forlorn
no one there to stay,
therefore during many hours,
he was there to pray.

"Fellows, what a luxury
in that parish house!
Bring away that furniture,
without any pause."

And the food that he did eat
was but mouldy bread;
water was the drink he drank,
praying still in bed.

But he spent his heritage
for the church alone;
chasuble was always new,
not one broken stone.

Every sunday shrilled his voice
"Oh, beware of hell!"
And then smiling he would say:
"There is heaven as well!"

He did found an orphanage,
without any coin.
"That's saint Philomena's work,
I did only join."

But the devil now was mad,
he made noise like hell.
Every night he smashed his load
in the vicar's cell.

"The devil cannot hurt me now,
he cannot take my soul;
he is my comrade, so to speak,
but he's black like coal."

And confessants came to him
in that church so small,
and the meagre parish priest
listened to them all.

"Woman, you pray without use,
for you are too proud."
"Then shall I be bound for hell?"
"God will help you out."

On the railroad many sick
came to him by train;
he just prayed for them to cure,
they returned all sane.

The bishop of the diocese
sent a curate there;
then the vicar went away,
to flee anywhere.

But the people of the town
found him where he stayed.
And no malice did he bear,
but he only prayed.

With his penitential belt
he grew slowly old;
and his wise and tired words
were precious like gold.

And the people throughout France
all were moved to tears
when the poor old vicar died
after many years.

Thus the noise came to an end,
going to his Lord;
never got a pause on earth,
seeing God henceforth.

YOUR HEART IS BUT A MASS OF PRIDE

You will tell me, perhaps, that you never judge people except by what you see or after you have actually heard or been the witness of some action: "I saw him doing this action, so I am sure. I heard what he said with my own ears. After that, I could not be mistaken."
But I shall reply by telling you to begin by entering into your own heart, which is but a mass of pride wherein everything is dried up. You will find yourself infinitely more guilty than the person whom you are so boldly judging, and you have plenty of room for fear, lest one day you will see him going to Heaven while you are being dragged down to Hell by the demons.
"Oh, unfortunate pride," says St. Augustine to us, "you dare to judge your brother on the slightest appearance of evil, and how do you know that he has not repented of his fault and that he is not numbered among God's friends? Take care rather that he does not take the place which your pride is putting you in great danger of losing."
Yes, my dear brethren, all these rash judgments and all these interpretations come only from a person who has a secret pride, who does not know himself, and who dares to wish to know the interior life of his neighbour, something which is known to God alone. If only, my dear children, we were able to arrive at the stage of eradicating this first of the capital sins from our hearts, our neighbour would never do any wrong according to us. We should never amuse ourselves by examining his conduct. We should be content to do nothing else save weep for our own sins and work as hard as we could to correct them.

LOVE OF OUR NEIGHBOUR

All of our religion is but a false religion and all our virtues are mere illusions and we ourselves are only hypocrites in the sight of God if we have not that universal charity for everyone, for the good and for the bad, for the poor people as well as for the rich, for all those who do us harm as much as for those who do us good.
No, my dear brethren, there is no virtue which will let us know better whether we are the children or God than charity. The obligation we have to love our neighbour is so important that Jesus Christ put it into a Commandment which He placed immediately after that by which He commands us to love Him with all our hearts. He tells us that all the law and the prophets are included in this commandment to love our neighbour.
Yes, my dear brethren, we must regard this obligation as the most universal, the most necessary and the most essential to religion and to our salvation. In fulfilling this Commandment, we are fulfilling all others. St. Paul tells us that the other Commandments forbid us to commit adultery, robbery, injuries, false testimonies. If we love our neighbour, we shall not do any of these things because the love we have for our neighbour would not allow us to do him any harm.

THE WORLD IS EVERYTHING AND GOD IS NOTHING!

If people would do for god what they do for the world, my dear people, what a great number of Christians would go to Heaven! But if you, dear children, had to pass three or four hours praying in a church, as you pass them at a dance or in a cabaret, how heavily the time would press upon you! If you had to go to a great many different places in order to hear a sermon, as you go for your pastimes or to satisfy your avarice and greed, what pretexts there would be, and how many detours would be taken to avoid going at all. But nothing is too much trouble when done for the world.
What is more, people are not afraid of losing either God or their souls or Heaven. With what good reason did Jesus Christ, my dear people, say that the children of this world are more zealous in serving their master, the world, than the children of light are in serving theirs, who is God.
To our shame, we must admit that people fear neither expense, nor even going into debt, when it is a matter of satisfying their pleasures, but if some poor person asks them for help, they have nothing at all. This is true of so many: they have everything for the world and nothing at all for God because to them, the world is everything and God is nothing.

In de Katholieke Kerk, zoals overal elders, vindt men veel schijnheiligheid.

't Was een simpele boerenzoon,
werkte altijd hard;
gaf aan alle schooiers,
steeds het beste part.

Kon geheel niet leren,
arm was zijn Latijn;
bij gebrek aan priesters
mocht hij priester zijn.

Werd benoemd tot dorpspastoor,
ging te voet daarheen;
kon de weg niet vinden,
stond daar heel alleen.

"Jongens, wijs aan mij de weg,
ik ben het zoeken moe,
dan zal ik u wijzen
naar de hemel toe."

De kerk was verlaten
niemand bad er meer,
daarom zat hij urenlang
daar bij God de Heer.

"Mensen, wat een luxe
in die pastorij;
weg met alle meubels,
dat is niks voor mij."

En het eten dat hij at:
't was beschimmeld brood;
hij dronk alleen maar water,
bad zijn knieën bloot.

Al het geld dat hij nog had
gaf hij aan de kerk;
zijn kazuifel superschoon,
lompen bij het werk.

's Zondags riep zijn schrille stem
"Hoedt u voor de hel!"
En iets later, heel verrukt:
"De hemel is er wel!"

Heeft daar toen een kinderhuis,
wonderlijk gesticht.
"'t Is sint Philomène
die dat werk verricht."

Maar nu werd de duivel boos,
maakte hels rumoer.
Nachtenlang ging hij tekeer,
op de zoldervloer.

"De duivel maakt mij niet meer bang,
wij zijn als kameraden;
hij pakt maar wat hij hebben wil,
mijn ziel kan hij niet schaden."

En de biechters stroomden toe
naar dat klein gehucht,
naar die arme dorpspastoor,
het werd een groot gerucht.

"Vrouw, uw biecht is nutteloos,
u bent veel te trots."
"Ben ik dan verdoemd , pastoor?"
"U bekeert zich plots."

Op de ijzeren weg naar Ars
reden volle treinen;
vele zieken knapten op
zonder medicijnen.

De bisschop van het diocees
zond een kapelaan;
toen is de pastoor van Ars
plotseling weggegaan.

Maar de mensen van het dorp
wilden hem niet kwijt.
Is toen teruggekomen
zonder wrok of spijt.

Met zijn boetegordel
werd hij langzaam oud;
en zijn moede woorden
waren schoon als goud.

Golven van ontroering
gingen door het land
toen die arme sukkelaar
dood ging in de krant.

Hij die niet van drukte hield
kreeg geen rust op aarde;
